BLOF

The Big List Of Filenames – observations of downloaded files from websites and apps where the filename has a date or partial date in it somewhere.

This is not an exhaustive list of formats detected by Filename Tidy – it is only a study into the variety of filenames in the real world, and how Filename Tidy copes with them.

If you’ve seen a date format in the wild not shown here, do get in touch – particularly if Filename Tidy does not (yet) detect it out of the box.

The formats in the table below are modified slightly from actual filenames seen in practice to preserve privacy and make comparison easier:

• bank account numbers and sort codes have been replaced with 8888[...];

• strings of hexadecimal characters have been replaced with 8f8f[...];

• all dates and times have been changed to 2nd January 2006 15:04:05 (or a reduced precision to match that in the original filename).
